Dear President Barack Obama,
I support Dr. Michael Rabinoff’s request to you to send the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control treaty to Congress for ratification. 168 countries have signed it, including the United States. However, President Bush didn’t send it to Congress for ratification. Please act to have the United States join the 164 countries that have already ratified the treaty, and bring the United States into alignment with the rest of the world on this important issue.
I also support the World Health Organization’s MPOWER guidelines:
Monitor tobacco use and prevention policies.
Protect people from tobacco smoke.
Offer help to quit tobacco use.
Warn about the dangers of tobacco.
Enforce bans on tobacco advertising, promotion, and sponsorship.
Raise taxes on tobacco.
The costs to our economy due to smoking are estimated to be 200 billion to over 250 billion dollars per year. Given our current economic crisis, we can’t afford as a nation to continue as we have regarding this issue. Since 430,000 to 450,000 people die each year from smoking and second hand tobacco smoke, over 3,300,000 Americans have died since 9/11. The World Health Organization estimates that 1 Billion people will die from smoking. Dr. Rabinoff further estimates that over 100,000,000 non-smokers will die from second hand tobacco smoke in this century (people in many countries have far less protection from second hand tobacco smoke)... unless we take action. If we continue as is, over 20,000,000 Americans will die from smoking and second hand tobacco smoke between 2000 and 2050. We have never had an external enemy that has wrought such a death toll for our country.
Using your famous hope filled 3 word phrase, Yes We Can create a better world and effectively deal with the tobacco issue.
Yes We Can keep our underage children and teens safe by preventing the sale of tobacco products to them.
Yes We Can help to decrease the spread of deadly tobacco products around the world.
Yes We Can help smokers who want to quit do so by ensuring access to effective cessation methods, and by compassionately supporting their efforts.
Yes We Can prevent people from being exposed to the harmful effects of second hand tobacco smoke.
Please take action on the tobacco issue for the benefit of our country and the world.
